Mission Statement

Restore America’s Estuaries is dedicated to the protection and restoration of bays and estuaries as essential resources for our nation.

Job Description

Restore America’s Estuaries (RAE) is seeking a Communications Intern for the Fall of 2021. Interns have the opportunity to assist with various projects within a nationally influential non-profit, and to learn, through hands-on support, how a local NGO thrives while making a difference in the coastal community.

The communications intern will assist RAE’s Communications Manager in the design, strategy, development, and publication of communications pieces, including but not limited to social media, monthly newsletters, and blog posts. Additionally, the intern will assist with website maintenance, collect and report data from website and media platforms, and present general trends regarding the current state of digital media in the environmental space to the broader RAE team. The ideal candidate must be able to successfully work independently and as part of a team, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and handle multiple tasks at one time.

Details:

  1. Assist with creation and publication of media to promote National Estuaries Week and ensure high engagement with audiences in the coastal restoration community. Report engagement numbers following the campaign and make suggestions for strategic opportunities to improve on future digital campaigns
  2. Assist with general website maintenance.
  3. Update project maps and identify opportunities to improve communication of RAE accomplishments through grant programs
  4. Assist with Giving Tuesday and Year-End digital fundraising campaign development
  5. Support Communications Manager and other staff in identifying worthwhile stories, notable accomplishments, and general developments in the coastal restoration sector to share in monthly newsletter(s) and on social media.
  6. Other tasks as required by RAE staff relating to communications and outreach
  7. Identify, catalog, and label photo’s in RAE’s SharePoint for future use in media products

Desired Skills:

  • Seeking a degree in communications, marketing, public policy, environmental science, or related field preferred
  • Experience working with WordPress & Constant Contact preferred, but not required
  • Experience using Canva, Photoshop, and/or other photo editing software(s)
  • Familiarity with website and social media data analytics
  • Experience using Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and other Microsoft products
  • Must be a strong writer with high attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at once and deliver products on time sensitive deadlines

Interns are expected to work remotely OR within our Arlington office of RAE for a minimum of 10-15 hours per week. A mutually-agreeable schedule will be determined during the onboarding process.

Benefits

The Communications Intern will gain valuable experience and develop important skills during their tenure at RAE, including:

  1. Learn real-world experience and on-the-job skills that will improve your understanding and ability to excel in a professional non-profit environment
  2. Get a better understanding of issues, threats, and opportunities facing our coastal ecosystems and communities
  3. Work with a successful, established non-profit organization well connected with state and federal agencies working towards cleaner, healthier, and more resilient estuary and coastal ecosystems
  4. Potential opportunity to travel to 2021 Living Shorelines Workshop in Cape May, NJ if schedule/time/cost allows.
  5. Opportunity to publish content on blogs, social media, and other outlets

This is a non-paid internship, but if permitted, course credit may be claimed for the semester by current students within their institute of learning. RAE is happy to offer assistance with objective-setting, progress reports, and other criteria that may be needed to fulfill a course requirement. All materials needed to complete any position-related projects – including email access – are provided by RAE.

RAE’s headquarters is located right above the Courthouse Metro Station (Orange & Silver lines) and next to several ART and WMATA bus stops. Many restaurants and coffee shops are within walking distance, and an outdoor plaza – complete with tables and lounge chairs – is directly outside the building.
