Spring 2025 Internship  

Restore America’s Estuaries (RAE) is a national leader in coastal restoration and protection, practitioner education and advocacy. Our local projects restore coastal wetlands, open fish passages, remove invasive species, engage communities, and build organizational capacity.  We advance the science and practice of habitat restoration through high-level meetings, technical exchanges and our biennial RAE Coastal & Estuarine Summit. As a leader in coastal issues, we advocate for coastal communities through engagement with Congress and the federal administration.   

SUMMARY: 

Restore America’s Estuaries is seeking an organized and enthusiastic undergraduate student (or recent graduate) eager for a paid, hands-on professional experience to assist with advocacy and communication activities. 

Intern will report directly to the Manager of Communications and Government Relations and be expected to work closely and in collaboration with key staff in the organization including but not limited to the Senior Director of Development, Program Managers, and the President. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Position requires a student to be in good standing at an accredited academic institution and have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 if still in school 
  • Ability to organize, expedite, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with ability to work in a team environment. 
  • Solid computer skills and proficiency in the use of Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
  • Demonstrated interest in coastal conservation. 
  • Applicant should be based in Washington D.C.
    • The position is remote but some attendance at events and meetings around D.C. is required
  • Interns should be able to offer at a minimum, 5-15 hours per week for 4 months  
  • Internship runs from January 2025 – May 2025. Exact start and end dates are flexible. 
  • Must have authorization to work in the United States

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The internship with Restore America’s Estuaries (RAE) focuses on supporting federal restoration advocacy and enhancing digital communications. Primary responsibilities include contacting Congressional offices to gather support for restoration programs, updating advocacy content and contact information, creating and publishing digital content, and assisting with website maintenance. The intern will also help develop communications for campaigns for the development of the Associate Member Program and monitor digital media engagement to inform future strategy under the direction of the Manager of Communications and Government Relations.  

KEY DUTIES: 

  • Support Congressional outreach and advocacy content updates. 
  • Create media for campaigns and track engagement 
  • Assist with monthly newsletters and social media management 
  • Keep staff up to date on legislative priorities  
  • Assist team members as needed with development, grant management, and administrative priorities. 

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in communications, public policy, environmental science, or a related field. 
  • Familiarity with WordPress, Constant Contact, Canva, Photoshop, or Google Analytics. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, strong writing, attention to detail, and multitasking abilities. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences. 
  • Experience with social media platforms and best practices, including campaign management on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. 
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment and engage with staff across departments.
